Authority & Responsibility:
The Board of Directors is the legal authority for the Bethesda House. As a member of the Board, a Director acts in a position of trust for the community and is responsible for the effective governance of the organization.
Requirements:
- Commitment to the Mission of the organization: In partnership with our community, Bethesda House provides secure Shelter, woman-centered advocacy, Outreach and other services to women, youth and children supporting them to live free from domestic abuse.
- Willingness to comply with the bylaws and governance policies of the corporation.
- Willingness to serve on committees.
- Attendance at monthly Board meetings.
- Attendance at meetings of assigned committees.
- Attendance at Annual General Meetings.
- Support of special events.
- Support of and participation in fundraising events.
- Willingness to participate within an anti-oppressive, anti-discriminatory framework.
- Submission of an acceptable Criminal Reference Check.
General Duties:
A Board member is fully informed on organizational matters, and participates in the Board’s deliberations and decisions in matters of policy, finance, programs, personnel and advocacy.
Qualification & Skills:
- A clear understanding and personal commitment to the positive values of volunteering.
- Planning and decision-making skills.
- The ability and determination to work as a member of a team.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability and interest in representing the organization in a positive and responsible manner.

Time & Financial Requirements:
- An annual average of ten to twelve Board Meetings per year, two to three hours each for a total of up to thirty-six hours a year. (Total hours will vary according to the tasks to be addressed by the Board in any given year.)
